Literary Belfast

Belfast has been home to a vast array of great writers, both native and expatriate, from past icons of literary culture like CS Lewis and Louis MacNeice, to the many contemporary writers based here today, all of whom have been recognised internationally for their literary achievements.

The city has a thriving local literary scene, and every year our staff, students and graduates are regularly featured in the many and varied arts festivals, including The Belfast International Arts Festival, the Belfast Book Festival, NI Science Festival, and Outburst Queer Arts Festival.

The Lifeboat

A project coordinated and hosted by Stephen Connolly and Manuela Moser, both graduates from the Heaney Centre, the Lifeboat readings have become a fixture of the Belfast poetry scene. The Lifeboat Press publishes award-winning pamphlets and anthologies.

No Alibis

No Alibis is an independent bookstore and a Belfast institution. Through their events, the shop has hosted local greats and international bestsellers. No Alibis Press publishes extraordinary novels and collections, with many of their authors associated with the Centre.

The Crescent Arts Centre

The Crescent is home to the Belfast Book Festival, as well as creative learning programmes and showcases of other artforms. They also regularly host The SHC Presents.. event series.

The Tangerine

Founded and edited by Heaney Centre graduates, The Tangerine provides a space for a plurality of voices: for new creative work, thoughtful discussion, and critical engagement with culture and politics in Belfast and beyond.

Irish Pages

Irish Pages is a biannual journal of contemporary writing edited in Belfast, and publishing poetry, short fiction, essays, creative non-fiction, essay reviews, nature-writing, memoir, translated work, and literary journalism, from Ireland and overseas.

Linen Hall Library

Founded in 1788 on radical, enlightenment principles, the Linen Hall library is a truly unique institution. It is renowned for its Irish and local studies collection.
